How to Successfully Manage a Large Team For any career-driven individual, embarking on a managerial role is the next step to progressing and moving up the ranks in their career. However, being a manager can be a demanding job with a lot of responsibility especially when you add managing a large, multi-cultural team to the mix. It’s critical that your employees remain at the forefront. According to research by Mercer, two in five employees plan to quit their jobs over the next 12 months. That said, it’s important to recognize that your most valuable relationships as a leader are with your workforce; as Debbie Lentz, President of Global Supply Chain at RS Components and the Electrocomponents Group discusses below, as a manager you’re also a leader, a mentor, and a coach. Within Debbie’s 2,000 deep team, each individual works differently and has their own engagement and motivational style. It doesn’t matter how many people you’re leading, how big your team is or who your team is made up of leadership skills and adaptability to different personalities is key. Creating and supporting an engaged workforce According to statistics, 57% of employees report not being provided with a clear direction from their managers and 69% of managers are not comfortable talking to their employees in general. These startling statistics confirm a clear separation in communication from managers to employees, which is not only affecting their work but could also drive employees to quit. An engaged employee is one who is fully absorbed by, and enthusiastic about, their work and having a strong relationship with your manager is an important element of that. Engaged staff can lower the risk of turnover and improve customer satisfaction, which is supported with further statistics that reveal highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability. Building team-focussed relationships Your management team is responsible for carrying out your strategy, so it’s important that your goals align to ensure you extract the best quality of work from your team. This is particularly difficult when working amongst a decentralized team; obtaining oversight on a team when you aren’t heading into the office every day means that these managers need to explore alternative ways to keep their workforce united. Research has shown that 93% of employees said that they would be more likely to stay in their job if their bosses would show more empathy, and also highlighted that 91% of CEOs believe empathy is directly linked to a business’s financial performance. With that said, it’s important that an established strong leader-employee relationship is built. Relationship building in the workplace should be seen as a marathon, rather than a sprint. Developing trust with your employees is developed over time. Debbie adds: “I have found that regularly checking in with my employees is an extremely effective way to gain an understanding of how they work, what makes them tick and allows me to gain an understanding of how each person approaches challenging tasks. As a leader, by making yourself approachable, you can be there to support your team when they need you most.” 24/7 availability is unrealistic, especially for a team of a large scale and across different countries, Having regular touchpoints whether its face to face or over video calls are pinnacle moments to gauge what is working for your employees and what areas need work. This is also a great opportunity to set employees clear goals they can achieve ahead of your next visit therefore keeping them motivated. Leading multicultural teams Individuals from different backgrounds, races, and nationalities approach work tasks and human interactions in different ways. Whether your team is across the globe, in one country or in one department, it’s important that managers are respectful of the vast variety of different religious beliefs and cultural customs of the workforce. Further to this, research reveals that inclusive companies are 1.7 times more likely to be innovative leaders in their market. Much like many international companies, language barriers are a common challenge. Bridging the gap of communication is not a straight-forward process and requires patience and innovative ways to help people from different countries understand your leadership. Avoid jargon-filled language and, when words fail you, the use of imagery can make a huge difference in understanding concepts. Debbie recognizes herself as being lucky in her career to travel to different countries and discusses how she has overcome language limitations: “When traveling abroad, it’s important to be aware of the use of slang and clichés and avoid them, as they may mean different things depending on the cultural background and related language. During my time in Zurich for example, I found my colleagues of German descent spoke British English as a second language, and speaking American English myself meant that I had to quickly adapt and learn their terminology, phrases, and clichés. I had to change my language to respond in a way they would be able to understand.” Handling a variety of personalities Across every team, you will encounter a mixture of personalities and temperaments, regardless of nationality. It’s your job to ensure everyone is working as effectively as possible, and working with a range of different generations, personalities, and nationalities requires different approaches. Initially, you will need to identify the different types of traits your employees possess. After identifying your employees personality types you can adjust your management style to their way of working. As more companies begin to prioritize employee culture, we are seeing a popular rise in team building events. These are a great way to help establish how employees work together on tasks that are unfamiliar to them, therefore helping employers to identify the doers to the thinkers within the team. Debbie continues: “Your way of working with individuals need to handled with finesse, for example, is their cultural norm to be more direct with instructions? Or is it more about relationships? Will taking them to lunch and having more of a celebration be the best way of working together?” Workplace camaraderie is built up from a leader’s willingness to build relationships with their employees on both a cultural and personal level. Job Search How to Reach Anyone You Want - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career “The quality of your life is the quality of your communication.” Tony Robbins What would you consider the most important factor for success when seeking a new job? A  great resume?  Relevant qualifications that match the job description? An MBA or other educational achievements? Actually, the most important factor for job search success and your overall career advancement is the quality of your communication. And, fundamentally, the first step  in quality communications is engaging people who have the authority to hire you for the job(s) you desire. But, we all know that the current hiring system is designed to insulate job seekers from the true decision makers. Online job postings are the most extreme example. Many  require that  you blindly complete an application and provide various additional information, not knowing if any human will actually see your information.  This is a source of great frustration, which is understandable. In contrast to online applications and other ineffective activities,  you know that  your best bet is to cut out the “middle men” (recruiters, resume screeners, etc.) and connect directly with decision makers who have the authority to hire you. After doing the research and identifying companies of interest, consider the following actions that  provide far higher odds of reaching people who can hire you: Take the time to research your companies of interest and  identify the specific person or people who would most likely be your boss. Various  online tools are available, most notably LinkedIn. These are your targets. Take a mental inventory to determine who you know in the companies of interest, if anyone. Review  your LinkedIn contacts, in case you have casual connections that you have forgotten. Where appropriate, reach out to them. Call if you have a phone number. If not, email if you have their direct email address. Last choice, send them an InMail message. Make a list of your best networking contacts and ask them blindly for introductions to your targets. This is a low  probability  option that is, next to going to networking meetings and passing out business cards (good luck with that), the most  common thing that people do in the  name of networking. Coach your contacts regarding how to make the introductions so they make them effectively. Go beyond the previous step of asking for blind introductions and  do thorough  research on LinkedIn by reviewing all the  first level contacts of your best networking contacts.  Identify those people  you most want to engage  (second level connections for you) and ask  for introductions. Again, coach your contacts to maximize the effectiveness of their introductions.  For those targets that cannot be reached through the previous methods,  research  to identify as many phone numbers and emails as you can. If you cannot find the direct number, you can most likely find a main/listed number for the company. Call those  for which you have phone numbers. Use email as a follow up to phone messages.  Make your voicemails and emails as compelling as possible. Answer the questions Whats in it for them? and Why should they respond back to you?. Consider upgrading to  one of the paid  account choices on LinkedIn. This will  provide  you a last resort electronic option to send your remaining targets a direct InMail. A last resort action  is to  show up at the office location and ask to speak with your target. This  has a low probability of success, but what  else can you do? If you truly want to work for the company, this will  demonstrate your passion and interest (NOT  desperation) by doing what no one else will do. If it is not practical to show up physically at the office location because they are in another city, write a concise and compelling note to your target and ask for 5 or 10 minutes to speak with them by phone. What else? What other methods have you used successfully to reach your targets? For most job seekers, engaging decision makers is a huge challenge. I hope you will try some of these suggestions and that  they will increase your ability to reach anyone. Improving your ability to engage strategic business contacts and deliver compelling messages will greatly increase your future odds of success in your job searches as well as in your overall career. It is not a need, but it would definitely be an aid in getting a good job. Having a great LinkedIn profile, complete with recommendations and job history, would tell a future employer a lot about how an applicant takes his career seriously. The key here is completing the profile and adding every frill that you can add, including a picture. Yes, you read it right. It would be a great idea to add a photograph to your profile. However, you cannot just leaf through your photo album and scan a snapshot from there, or browse through your Facebook profile. You will need to get a great photograph. Below are some of the common options that people have, and the suggestions as to which option to take: Empty or not: A lot of people say that their accomplishments will speak for them, and that is true to a certain degree.   However, that is not the complete picture of an applicant, and most jobs come with the responsibility of giving presentations and sales pitches.   If you cannot show that you are capable of doing such a thing through a picture, then an employer would contact someone who would have more confidence in that area, which would most likely mean someone with a picture in place. A photo of a photo, or an entirely new one: We all have really good pictures in store.   Either a graduation picture or a picture at an equally important event.   Not all of them are digitally captured though, and some may have the bright idea of taking a digital photo of these pictures and uploading them.   Unfortunately, that would come out as pixelated or blurred, and that would not be, in any way, a good representation of you.   Take your time to come up with a good photograph.   Hire a professional if you need to.   Just make sure that the photo itself is impressive. Formal or informal: This is a business website, and your profile will get around, especially if you have a good job and people are interested in your services.   A picture of you in a party may show that you are lively and could get along with anyone, but a bottle of alcohol in your hand or a pet at your side would not show your professional side.   Reserve the party pictures for your Facebook page, and put a formal picture in the forefront of your LinkedIn profile to show that you are serious about your business. If you have attained business growth by increasing your customers and improving your profit margin, then expansion might be considered a no-brainer. You might want to move into new markets, take on new staff, and even move into bigger business premises. Whats stopping you? Well, it also pays to be mindful, so if business expansion has been something on your agenda, you might want to consider the pros and cons before you decide. To grow or not to grow? Pro: More people will benefit from your business. As you expand, you might want to take on extra staff, so you are creating new jobs. If you move business premises or open up a second branch of your business, your product and service will benefit new customers. And you might benefit, as with more staff and with more customers, your business will grow further, and that will boost your bank balance. Con: There will be costs involved. If you take on more staff, you are going to have to pay more wages, including any other benefits that you need to pay out as an employer. If you move into bigger premises or take on a second branch, there will also be higher overheads. There are ways to cut costs in your business, so if you are looking to expand, you might also consider finding ways to reduce some of your regular expenses, so you dont make any financial mistakes.Pro: You will have an edge over the competition.
